The other day I spent a little time with a Man Ray book. Can you tell? Amazing when you realize he was doing this in the 20′s and earlier. Fabulous work. If you’re not familiar with him, and would like to see the beginnings of truly experimental photography, seek him out.

This image reminds me of something I saw when I was young at The Museum of Contemporary Art, located in Downtown Los Angeles. I can’t remember anything specific. Only that this takes me back to a very fuzzy memory. It seems like lately I’m meeting people, usually younger who have never visited this wonderful museum, and that makes me sad. If we aren’t going to take a little time, see some art, and support the art in our own cities…I don’t know what to say. Go out and see art! You’ll be glad you did.

Clouds drifted lazily over downtown tonight, and drew me to the streets to shoot. This turned out to be a stroke of luck, because wherever I drove I kept looking up. Were it not for those magnetic clouds I might have missed this most jubilant stucco structure.

Tonight, heading back to one my favorite haunts, Union Pacific Street, I discovered something completely unexpected, and quite wonderful. On one of the lonely streets, surrounding by steel, concrete and decay, a thriving vegetable garden. Not at all random, this tiny plot included corn and carrots, radishes and lettuce, and a number of other vegetables I couldn’t yet recognize because they are still underground. Their leafy heads somehow finding enough oxygen to support that which lies below.

Union Pacific Street  – Heavy industry, eighteen wheelers, 24 shifts, and fresh vegetables.
